DIY Story Stones: A Creative Reading Activity
Emma Rodriguez
Story stones are a simple, inexpensive craft that can spark hours of creative storytelling. Here's how to make and use them with your children.
What You'll Need
- Smooth, flat stones (river rocks work great)
- Acrylic paint or paint pens
- Clear sealant spray
- A cloth bag for storage
Creating Your Stones
Paint simple images on each stone: animals, weather symbols, characters, objects, settings. Aim for 15-20 stones with varied images. Let dry completely and seal with clear spray.
How to Play
Draw stones randomly from the bag and create a story incorporating each image. Take turns adding to the story, or let each person create their own tale.
Educational Benefits
Story stones develop narrative skills, vocabulary, creativity, and sequencing abilities while providing screen-free entertainment.
